A retaining wall is doing a serious job. There are tonnes of wet soil pushing on it every winter, and a wall that fails takes the garden and sometimes the fence with it.
Two things decide whether it lasts: what's holding it up, and where the water goes. Drainage behind the wall is the one most commonly skipped, because you can't see it once it's backfilled.
Get it right and a slope you can't use turns into flat, usable yard.

How high can I go without a permit?
It varies by council and by what sits above and below the wall. As a rule, once you're near a metre or you're retaining next to a boundary, assume you need approval. We'll check your specific situation as part of the quote.
Why does drainage matter so much?
Wet soil is enormously heavier than dry soil, and water sitting behind a wall has nowhere to go but into it. Most failed retaining walls are drainage failures rather than strength failures. It's the cheapest part of the job and the worst one to skip.
Can you match the wall to the house?
